What are relationship problems?
This page is about relationship difficulties. What drives them, why the same patterns keep repeating, and how psychological support at Integro Health can help in a safe, non-judgemental environment in South West WA.
Relationship problems are the recurring difficulties that show up in how we connect with others, whether with a partner, family, friends, or colleagues. They might look like constant conflict, growing distance, difficulty trusting, feeling unheard, repeating the same argument, or finding yourself in the same painful dynamic again and again with different people. These patterns are rarely about being a bad person or choosing badly. They usually come from what we learned, early on, about how relationships work and what we can expect from them.
Why the same patterns repeat
The ways we connect as adults are shaped by our earliest relationships, where we learned whether people could be trusted, whether our needs mattered, and how to handle closeness and conflict. Those early lessons become templates we carry, often without realising, into every relationship that follows. That is why intelligent, caring people can find themselves stuck in the same painful patterns, wondering why it keeps happening. Relationship difficulties often sit alongside anxiety, low self-esteem, anger, or the effects of childhood experiences.
What we often see in practice is that both people in a struggling relationship are usually protecting themselves in ways that made sense once but now push the other away. Understanding your own part in the pattern, without blame, is where change becomes possible, whether or not the other person is in the room.
At Integro Health, we help you understand these patterns and build new ways of relating, so your relationships can become a source of support rather than strain.
How we work with you on relationships
There is no single correct path through relationship difficulties. What we do is work alongside you, at a pace that feels manageable, using approaches grounded in psychological evidence and shaped by your individual story.
Understanding your experience
Your first sessions are about building a picture of you, not just the pattern, but your history, your relationships, your emotional world, and what you are hoping life might look and feel like. There is no rush here. We ask questions because we genuinely want to understand.
Understanding your relationship patterns
Together, we look at the patterns that keep repeating and where they come from. What happens when things go wrong? What are you protecting? What did you learn early on about closeness, conflict, and trust? Seeing the pattern clearly is what makes it possible to change it.
Working with the underlying layers
For many people, relationship difficulties sit on top of early experiences, attachment patterns, or old wounds around trust and worth. We work on those layers using approaches like schema therapy and EMDR where relevant, tailored to your situation.
Building new ways of responding
Over time, we help you build new ways of communicating, setting boundaries, and staying connected under stress, so you can relate in ways that bring you closer rather than driving you apart.
Ongoing support at the right pace
Change rarely happens in a straight line. Sessions are spaced to suit where you are, more frequent during difficult periods, stepped back as you gain ground. We are here for as long as the journey needs us to be, whether that is a few months or considerably longer.

What you can expect when you reach out
No judgement, ever
Whatever is happening in your relationships, and whatever part you feel you have played, you will be met with warmth and genuine care. Not a lecture, and not a checklist.
A whole-person lens
We look at every part of you, your mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual wellbeing, because relationship difficulties rarely live in just one part of a person’s life.
Evidence-based approaches
We draw on schema therapy, attachment-based work, and CBT depending on what fits you. Not a one-size protocol, but a genuinely tailored response to your situation.
In-clinic and online options
Whether you can get to our Eaton clinic in Bunbury or you need the privacy and convenience of telehealth, we can work with you wherever you are in South West WA and beyond.
What people get wrong about relationship problems
One of the most persistent myths about relationship problems is that if a relationship takes work, it must be wrong. All meaningful relationships take work. The difference is between the ordinary effort of two people growing together and patterns that leave one or both feeling consistently hurt, unheard, or unsafe.
Another common misconception is that you cannot make progress unless the other person is willing to come too. In fact, a great deal changes when even one person understands their own patterns and begins to respond differently. You do not need your partner or family member to attend for the work to be worthwhile.
We also see many people in South West WA who blame themselves entirely, or blame the other person entirely, before reaching out. The truth is usually a shared pattern that neither person created alone. One of the first things we do is step back from blame and look at the dynamic itself, which is far more useful.
Finally, many people assume relationship help is only about romantic partners. It is not. Individual therapy and counselling, delivered privately one-on-one at our Eaton clinic near Bunbury or by telehealth to locations like Margaret River, can help with any relationship that matters to you, including family, friendships, and how you relate to yourself.
Is what I am experiencing actually a relationship problem?
It is common to wonder whether your difficulties are just normal ups and downs, or something worth getting support for. The honest answer is that the label matters less than the impact.
If conflict, distance, mistrust, or feeling unheard is causing you ongoing distress, affecting your wellbeing, or repeating in a way you cannot seem to break, even some of the time, then it is worth exploring with a psychotherapist or counsellor. You do not need your relationship to be in crisis to deserve support, and getting help early often prevents small patterns from becoming entrenched ones.
Common relationship patterns
Relationship difficulties take many forms, but some patterns are especially common:
Conflict cycles, where the same argument repeats, escalates, and never quite resolves, often leaving both people feeling misunderstood.
Distance and disconnection, where you drift apart, stop really talking, or start to feel more like housemates or strangers than close.
Trust and closeness difficulties, where fear of being hurt, abandoned, or controlled makes real closeness feel unsafe. These often trace back to earlier experiences and can connect with anxiety and low self-esteem.
At Integro Health, we are not here to take sides or assign blame. What we care about is helping you relate in ways that let you feel well, connect clearly, and live the way you want to. You can read more about what the first session looks like here.
Your questions answered
Yes, in many cases. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP provides access to a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist. Your GP will assess your eligibility, and your sessions at Integro Health can be structured to make the most of those rebated appointments. It is worth speaking with your GP in Bunbury, Busselton, or wherever you are located to get a referral in place before your first session.
Yes, and many people do. Working individually is genuinely effective, because when one person understands their patterns and begins to respond differently, the whole dynamic often shifts. We also offer relationship and couples work where that is the right fit. If you are not sure which suits your situation, get in touch and we can help you decide.
Yes. Everything you share in sessions is confidential. There are narrow legal exceptions, for example if there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or another person, but outside of those circumstances your privacy is protected. We will explain these boundaries clearly in your first session so there are no surprises.
Yes. We offer telehealth sessions across South West WA and Australia-wide, which means you can access support from anywhere, whether you are in a regional area like Manjimup or Collie, or simply prefer the privacy of attending from home. Telehealth sessions work in the same structured, safe way as in-clinic appointments.
This varies with how long-standing the patterns are and what sits underneath them. Many people gain useful insight and practical change within a few months. Where patterns are rooted in early experiences, working over a longer period can help rework them more deeply. We review progress with you and adjust as needed.
That is a common and difficult place to be, and it is not our role to make that decision for you. What we can do is help you understand yourself and the relationship more clearly, so that whatever you decide comes from a steadier, better-understood place rather than from fear, guilt, or exhaustion.
No referral is needed to book a session. If you wish to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will need a GP referral first, but you are welcome to contact us directly and we can guide you through that process if needed.
We tailor the approach to you. Schema therapy is valuable for understanding the deep patterns and early experiences that shape how we relate. Attachment-based work looks at how you connect and where that comes from. CBT helps with communication and the thoughts that fuel conflict. Where old wounds or trauma are involved, EMDR can help. We tailor the approach to you, not the other way around.
