Help with Phobias

Help with Phobias

You can do the things fear has taken

A phobia can quietly shrink your world, until you are organising life around avoiding one thing. The good news is that phobias are among the most treatable of all anxiety problems. At Integro Health we help you face them gradually and get your freedom back.

What is a phobia?

This page is about phobias. What they are, why they persist, and how psychological support at Integro Health can help you overcome them in a safe, non-judgemental environment in South West WA.

A phobia is an intense, persistent fear of a specific object, situation, or activity that is out of proportion to the actual danger it poses. Common examples include fears of flying, driving, heights, needles, animals, enclosed spaces, or social situations. What sets a phobia apart from an ordinary dislike is the level of distress it causes and the lengths a person will go to in order to avoid the feared thing. Phobias are not silly or irrational failings. They are a very human response that has simply become stuck, and they respond extremely well to the right support.

Why phobias take hold

Phobias are maintained largely by avoidance. When we avoid something we fear, we feel immediate relief, and that relief teaches the brain that the thing really was dangerous and that avoiding it was the right call. So the fear is never given the chance to settle, and it often grows, sometimes spreading to related situations. A fear of driving on the freeway can become a fear of driving at all. Phobias frequently sit alongside anxiety and can overlap with panic.

What we often see in practice is that people have organised significant parts of their lives around avoiding the feared thing, sometimes for years, and feel embarrassed about it. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. The mechanism that keeps a phobia going is well understood, and so is how to reverse it.

At Integro Health, we help you face the fear gradually and safely, in a way you control completely, so your brain learns that you are safe and the fear loses its grip.

How we work with you on phobias

Phobias respond exceptionally well to structured, evidence-based support. What we do is work alongside you, at a pace you set, using approaches grounded in psychological evidence and shaped by your individual story.

Understanding your experience

Your first sessions are about building a picture of you, not just the phobia, but your history, your relationships, your emotional world, and what you are hoping life might look and feel like. There is no rush here. We ask questions because we genuinely want to understand.

Understanding your fear and its triggers

Together, we map out exactly what you fear, what you have been avoiding, and how the phobia has shaped your life. Understanding how avoidance keeps the fear alive is the foundation for gently reversing it.

Working with the underlying layers

Sometimes a phobia links back to a specific frightening experience or to wider anxiety. Where that is the case, we can work with those roots too, using approaches like EMDR and CBT, so we address the source and not only the fear itself.

Building new ways of responding

Using gradual exposure, always planned and fully in your control, we help you face the feared situation step by manageable step, so your confidence grows and the fear steadily loses its power over you.

Ongoing support at the right pace

Change rarely happens in a straight line. Sessions are spaced to suit where you are, more frequent during difficult periods, stepped back as you gain ground. We are here for as long as the journey needs us to be, whether that is a few months or considerably longer.

What you can expect when you reach out

No judgement, ever

Whatever you are afraid of, and however much you feel you should be over it, you will be met with warmth and genuine care. Not a lecture, and not a checklist.

A whole-person lens

We look at every part of you, your mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual wellbeing, because a phobia rarely lives in just one part of a person’s life.

Evidence-based approaches

We draw on gradual exposure, CBT, and EMDR where relevant, the approaches with the strongest evidence for phobias, tailored to you. Not a one-size protocol, but a plan you control.

In-clinic and online options

Whether you can get to our Eaton clinic in Bunbury or you need the privacy and convenience of telehealth, we can work with you wherever you are in South West WA and beyond.

What people get wrong about phobias

One of the most common myths about phobias is that they are trivial, just a silly fear you should be able to talk yourself out of. Anyone who lives with a genuine phobia knows how powerful and limiting it can be, and how little logic has to do with it. Phobias are real, and they deserve to be taken seriously.

Another misconception is that the way to beat a fear is to force yourself to confront it head-on, all at once. That approach is frightening and often backfires. Effective treatment is gradual and controlled, building up step by step, which is far more comfortable and far more effective.

We also see many people in South West WA who have quietly arranged their lives around a phobia for years, avoiding flights, bridges, medical appointments, or social events, before reaching out. Avoidance is understandable, but it keeps the fear alive. Reversing it, gently, is what sets you free.

Finally, many people assume a lifelong phobia is simply part of who they are. It does not have to be. Individual therapy and counselling, delivered privately one-on-one at our Eaton clinic near Bunbury or by telehealth to locations like Margaret River, helps most people overcome even long-held phobias.

Is what I am experiencing actually a phobia?

It is common to wonder whether your fear is a genuine phobia or just a strong dislike. The honest answer is that the label matters less than the impact.

If a specific fear causes you significant distress, or if you go out of your way to avoid it in a way that limits your life, your work, your health, or the things you would like to do, even some of the time, then it is worth exploring with a psychotherapist. You do not need your fear to seem reasonable to anyone else to deserve support.

Common types of phobia

Phobias take many forms, but they tend to fall into a few groups:

Situational phobias, such as fear of flying, driving, bridges, lifts, or enclosed spaces.

Natural and medical phobias, such as fear of heights, water, storms, needles, blood, or medical procedures, which can lead people to avoid important health care.

Animal and social phobias, such as fear of dogs, spiders, or insects, or intense fear of social situations, which overlaps with anxiety.

At Integro Health, we are not primarily focused on which category your fear falls into. What we care about is whether it is getting in the way of you living well, freely, and the way you want to. You can read more about what the first session looks like here.

Your questions answered

Yes, in many cases. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP provides access to a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist. Your GP will assess your eligibility, and your sessions at Integro Health can be structured to make the most of those rebated appointments. It is worth speaking with your GP in Bunbury, Busselton, or wherever you are located to get a referral in place before your first session.

No. Nothing happens without your agreement, and we never throw you in at the deep end. Treatment is gradual and fully in your control. We start with what feels manageable and build up step by step, so each stage feels achievable. This gentle, planned approach is exactly why it works so well.

Yes. Everything you share in sessions is confidential. There are narrow legal exceptions, for example if there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or another person, but outside of those circumstances your privacy is protected. We will explain these boundaries clearly in your first session so there are no surprises.

Yes. We offer telehealth sessions across South West WA and Australia-wide, which means you can access support from anywhere, whether you are in a regional area like Manjimup or Collie, or simply prefer the privacy of attending from home. Telehealth sessions work in the same structured, safe way as in-clinic appointments.

Phobias are often among the quickest anxiety problems to treat. A specific, single phobia can sometimes improve markedly within a handful of sessions. More complex or long-standing fears, or several fears together, may take a little longer. We will set a clear plan and review progress with you as we go.

It can be helpful to know. Where a phobia is linked to a specific frightening or traumatic event, we can use approaches like EMDR to process that experience as well as work on the fear itself. Addressing the root as well as the avoidance often makes recovery smoother and more lasting.

No referral is needed to book a session. If you wish to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will need a GP referral first, but you are welcome to contact us directly and we can guide you through that process if needed.

The most effective approach is gradual exposure, delivered within CBT, where you face the feared situation step by step at a pace you control. Where a phobia stems from a frightening past experience, EMDR can help process it. We tailor the plan to you, and you are in control throughout.
