Help with Burnout

Running on empty is not sustainable

Burnout is what happens when demands outstrip recovery for too long, until even things you once cared about feel like too much. It is not a personal failing. At Integro Health we help you recover and build a way of living that does not cost you everything.

What is burnout?

This page is about burnout. What it is, how it develops, and how psychological support at Integro Health can help you recover in a safe, non-judgemental environment in South West WA.

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress, most often related to work or caring roles, though it can come from any sustained demand. It typically shows up in three ways: deep exhaustion that rest does not fix, a growing sense of cynicism or detachment, and a feeling of reduced effectiveness, that no matter how hard you work it is never enough. Burnout is not laziness or weakness. It is what happens to committed, capable people who have given too much for too long without enough coming back.

How burnout builds

Burnout rarely arrives suddenly. It builds slowly, often in people who care deeply and hold themselves to high standards, as the balance between what is being asked and what they have to give tips further and further out. In the early stages people usually push harder, which works for a while and then stops working. By the time exhaustion sets in, rest alone no longer restores them, because the underlying imbalance is still there. Burnout frequently sits alongside chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.

What we often see in practice is that the very qualities that make someone good at what they do, dedication, conscientiousness, a reluctance to let people down, are also what drove them past their limits. Understanding that, rather than simply blaming yourself for not coping, is usually where recovery begins.

At Integro Health, we help you recover from burnout and, just as importantly, understand what led there, so you can rebuild in a way that is sustainable rather than heading straight back to the edge.

How we work with you on burnout

Recovering from burnout takes more than a holiday, and you do not have to figure it out alone. What we do is work alongside you, at a pace that respects how depleted you are, using approaches grounded in psychological evidence and shaped by your individual story.

Understanding your experience

Your first sessions are about building a picture of you, not just the burnout, but your history, your relationships, your emotional world, and what you are hoping life might look and feel like. There is no rush here. We ask questions because we genuinely want to understand.

Understanding what led here

Together, we look honestly at what tipped you into burnout. Where did the balance break down? What kept you pushing past your limits? What made it hard to stop or ask for help? Understanding this is what makes it possible to recover without simply repeating the pattern.

Working with the underlying layers

Burnout often sits on top of perfectionism, difficulty setting boundaries, or a sense that your worth depends on how much you do. We work with those deeper drivers using approaches like CBT, ACT, and schema therapy, so recovery lasts.

Building new ways of responding

Over time, we help you rebuild your energy, reconnect with what matters, and develop sustainable ways of working and living, including the boundaries and self-permission that make it possible to keep going without burning out again.

Ongoing support at the right pace

Change rarely happens in a straight line. Sessions are spaced to suit where you are, more frequent during difficult periods, stepped back as you gain ground. We are here for as long as the journey needs us to be, whether that is a few months or considerably longer.

What you can expect when you reach out

No judgement, ever

However depleted you feel, and however much you feel you should be coping, you will be met with warmth and genuine care. Not a lecture, and not a checklist.

A whole-person lens

We look at every part of you, your mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual wellbeing, because burnout rarely lives in just one part of a person’s life.

Evidence-based approaches

We draw on CBT, ACT, and schema therapy depending on what fits you. Not a one-size protocol, but a genuinely tailored response to your situation.

In-clinic and online options

Whether you can get to our Eaton clinic in Bunbury or you need the privacy and convenience of telehealth, we can work with you wherever you are in South West WA and beyond.

What people get wrong about burnout

One of the most persistent myths about burnout is that a good holiday will fix it. Rest helps, but if you return to the same conditions that caused the burnout, the exhaustion comes back, often quickly. Real recovery involves changing the underlying imbalance, not just topping up the tank before draining it again.

Another common misconception is that burnout is a sign you are not tough or capable enough. The opposite is usually true. Burnout tends to strike the dedicated, conscientious, and capable, precisely because they keep giving long after they should have stopped. It is a consequence of caring too much with too little support, not of weakness.

We also see many people in South West WA who have pushed through burnout for months or years, feeling guilty for struggling, before reaching out. That guilt is part of the problem, not a fair reflection of reality. One of the first things we do is help set it down.

Finally, many people assume burnout is purely a work problem to be solved with time management. Often the roots run deeper, into how you relate to work, rest, and your own worth. Individual therapy and counselling, delivered privately one-on-one at our Eaton clinic near Bunbury or by telehealth to locations like Margaret River, helps you recover and change the pattern at its source.

Is what I am feeling actually burnout?

It is common to wonder whether you are burnt out or just tired, and whether you have any right to feel this way when others seem to cope. The honest answer is that the label matters less than the impact.

If exhaustion that rest does not fix, growing detachment or cynicism, or a sense of being ineffective is affecting your work, your health, your relationships, or your enjoyment of life, even some of the time, then it is worth exploring with a psychotherapist. You do not need to have collapsed to deserve support, and getting help earlier makes recovery easier.

How burnout shows up

Burnout is usually understood through three main features:

Exhaustion, a deep physical and emotional depletion that sleep and time off no longer seem to restore.

Detachment and cynicism, feeling distant from your work, your colleagues, or the people you care for, and losing the sense of meaning that once motivated you.

Reduced effectiveness, a nagging sense that you are not doing enough or doing it well, no matter how hard you try. Left unaddressed, burnout can slide into depression and worsening anxiety.

At Integro Health, we are not here to judge how you have coped. What we care about is helping you recover so you can feel well, think clearly, and live the way you want to. You can read more about what the first session looks like here.

Your questions answered

Yes, in many cases. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP provides access to a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist. Your GP will assess your eligibility, and your sessions at Integro Health can be structured to make the most of those rebated appointments. It is worth speaking with your GP in Bunbury, Busselton, or wherever you are located to get a referral in place before your first session.

Not necessarily. For some people, changes at work are part of recovery, but for many, the more important shifts are in boundaries, expectations, and how they relate to work and rest. We help you understand your situation clearly so that any decisions, big or small, come from a steadier place rather than sheer exhaustion.

Yes. Everything you share in sessions is confidential. There are narrow legal exceptions, for example if there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or another person, but outside of those circumstances your privacy is protected. We will explain these boundaries clearly in your first session so there are no surprises.

Yes. We offer telehealth sessions across South West WA and Australia-wide, which means you can access support from anywhere, whether you are in a regional area like Manjimup or Collie, or simply prefer the privacy of attending from home. Telehealth sessions work in the same structured, safe way as in-clinic appointments.

This depends on how depleted you are and how long the burnout has been building. Some people feel meaningfully better within a couple of months as they recover energy and adjust the pressures on them. Where perfectionism or long-standing patterns are involved, working over a longer period helps prevent a relapse. We move at a pace that respects how tired you are.

Very much so. Difficulty giving yourself permission to rest is one of the most common drivers of burnout, and one of the most important things to work on. Part of what we do together is gently loosen the belief that your worth depends on constant output, so that looking after yourself stops feeling like a failure.

No referral is needed to book a session. If you wish to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will need a GP referral first, but you are welcome to contact us directly and we can guide you through that process if needed.

We tailor the approach to you. CBT helps you recognise and shift the thinking and habits that drove the burnout. ACT helps you reconnect with what matters and protect your energy for it. Schema therapy is valuable where perfectionism or self-sacrifice run deep. We tailor the approach to you, not the other way around.
