What is adult therapy?
This page is about therapy for adults. What it involves, what it can help with, and how the clinicians and counsellors at Integro Health work with you in a safe, non-judgemental environment in South West WA.
Adult therapy is one-on-one psychological support for the challenges that come with adult life, at any stage, from early adulthood through midlife and into later years. It is a confidential space to make sense of what you are facing, understand yourself more clearly, and build the insight and skills to move forward. People come with a specific difficulty, during a hard season, or simply because something feels off and they want to understand it. You do not need to be in crisis, or to have a diagnosis, to benefit.
What adult therapy can help with
Adults come to therapy for a wide range of reasons. Some are working through anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, trauma, or grief. Others are navigating the particular challenges of adult life, relationship and family difficulties, parenting, career pressure, big decisions, identity and purpose, health, ageing, or a sense of being stuck. All of these are worth support.
What we often see in practice is that current struggles are connected to longer-standing patterns, old wounds, unmet needs, or ways of coping formed long ago. Understanding those connections, with curiosity rather than judgement, is usually where meaningful change begins.
At Integro Health, we treat the whole person, not just the presenting issue. That means working at your pace, with an approach built around you rather than a fixed formula.
How we work with you
There is no single correct path through therapy, and no two people are the same. What we do is work alongside you, at a pace that feels manageable, using approaches grounded in psychological evidence and shaped by your individual story.
Understanding your experience
Your first sessions are about getting to know you, your history, your relationships, and what you are hoping for. There is no rush. We ask questions because we genuinely want to understand.
Making sense of what is happening
Together, we look at what is going on and why, including the patterns and beliefs beneath the surface. Often, seeing your experience clearly, with someone alongside you, begins to shift something.
Working with the underlying layers
Where a difficulty is rooted in trauma, old wounds, or long-standing patterns, we work with those layers using approaches like CBT, ACT, EMDR, and schema therapy, tailored to you. Treating the roots, not just the surface, is what creates lasting change.
Building new ways forward
We help you develop practical, lasting ways of thinking, feeling, and responding, so you leave therapy with more choice and more confidence than you came with.
Support at the right pace
Some people come for a focused piece of work, others for a longer journey. We check in with you regularly and let the work move at whatever pace is right for you.

What you can expect when you reach out
No judgement, ever
Whatever you bring, you will be met with warmth and genuine care. Not a lecture, and not a checklist.
A whole-person lens
We look at every part of you, your mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual wellbeing, because difficulties rarely live in just one part of a person’s life.
Evidence-based approaches
We draw on CBT, ACT, EMDR, and schema therapy depending on what fits you. Not a one-size protocol, but a genuinely tailored response to your situation.
In-clinic and online options
Whether you can get to our Eaton clinic in Bunbury or you need the flexibility of telehealth, we can work with you wherever you are in South West WA and beyond.
What people get wrong about therapy
One of the most common myths about therapy is that it is only for people in crisis or with a serious mental illness. In reality, adults come to therapy for the full range of human difficulty, from feeling low or stuck to navigating a decision or wanting to understand themselves better. You do not need a diagnosis, or a dramatic reason, to benefit.
Another misconception is that by adulthood you should be able to handle things on your own, and that needing support is a weakness. The opposite is true. Recognising when you could use help, and acting on it, is a sign of self-awareness and strength, not failure.
We also see many people in South West WA who put off reaching out for years, telling themselves their problems are not serious enough. Difficulties left unaddressed tend to entrench, and getting support earlier usually makes the work easier and shorter.
Finally, many people worry therapy is just talking, or that they will be judged. Good therapy is active, structured, and collaborative. Your first session, at our Eaton clinic near Bunbury or by telehealth, is a warm, respectful conversation entirely at your pace.
Is adult therapy right for me?
It is common to wonder whether your difficulties are significant enough for therapy, or whether you should just push through. The honest answer is that if something is weighing on you, it is worth exploring.
If you are struggling with your mood, your relationships, your work, or your sense of yourself, feeling stuck, or wanting to understand and grow, then adult therapy can help. You do not need to be in crisis, and you do not need to have it all figured out, to make a start.
How adult therapy works
Every person is different, but there are a few things most can expect:
Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly to begin with, then spaced out as you gain ground, and typically run around 50 minutes.
The first few sessions are about understanding you and your goals, and getting a feel for whether we are a good fit, which matters more than anything.
The work is collaborative and built around what matters to you, drawing on whichever evidence-based approaches suit your situation. You can read about the specific concerns we help with on our I Need Help With pages.
At Integro Health, our aim is to help you feel well, think clearly, and live the way you want to. You can read more about what the first session looks like here.
Your questions answered
Yes, in many cases. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP gives you a Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year with a registered psychologist. Your GP will assess your eligibility. It is worth getting a referral in place with your GP in Bunbury, Busselton, or wherever you are located before your first session.
Fit matters more than almost anything in therapy. You are welcome to read about each of our practitioners and their areas of focus, and choose who feels right. If you are not sure, get in touch and we can help match you to someone well suited to what you are working through.
Yes. Everything you share in sessions is confidential, within the usual legal limits, for example where there is an immediate risk of serious harm. We will explain exactly how confidentiality works in your first session, so there are no surprises.
Yes. We offer telehealth sessions across South West WA and Australia-wide, so you can access support from home or anywhere private, whether you are in a regional area like Manjimup or Collie or simply prefer the convenience. Online sessions work in the same structured, supportive way as in-clinic ones.
This varies with what you are working through. Some people find a handful of focused sessions makes a real difference. Others value a longer journey, particularly where trauma or long-standing patterns are involved. There is no set course, and we review progress with you as we go.
No, it is never too late. Many people we work with are making sense of experiences and patterns from long ago, and find real relief in doing so. The mind can process and settle things whenever you feel ready to begin.
No referral is needed to book a session. You can contact us directly to arrange a first appointment. If you would like to access Medicare rebates through a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you will need a GP referral first, and we can guide you through that.
We draw on a range of evidence-based methods depending on what fits you best, including CBT, ACT, EMDR, and schema therapy. Rather than forcing you into one model, we tailor the approach to you and what you are working through.
